Acne prone or oily skin is fundamentally caused by the skin becoming sensitive to a hormone known as DHT. At certain times of our lives when our normal hormone balance is altered, such as during our 'teens', when pregnant, when on the pill, pre and through the menopause or during times of prolonged stress or anxiety then the skin can become sensitised to DHT. In many cases this sensitivity goes when normal hormonal balance returns, but in others they are left with a residual sensitivity which may be localised to areas such as the infamous T Zone where sensitivity continues to create 'problems'.
The skins behaviour changes in response to this sensitivity in a number of ways. It produces more oil and the rate at which we shed skin slows down. At the same time the 'pores' (pilo sebaceous duct) that the oil comes out of, narrows in diameter as the side walls thicken and are more easily blocked by the increased debris and dead skin in combination with the increased oil.
This leads to a plug or blockage and our natural skin bacteria build up underneath this plug. The bacteria feed on this plug and the bi-products they produce cause inflammation and a red spot develops. The numbers of bacteria increase and you have the classic spot with yellow head
Reducing bacteria through antibiotics can help but the problem is not primarily a bacterial one and taking long courses of antibiotics has potential problems in the impact on your gut and skin resident bacteria; never mind the potential side effects from taking medicines. It is important to keep bacterial levels under control as a secondary measure.
Exfoliants and detergents can help keep the amount of surface oil, skin and debris down and help to unblock 'pores' and moisturising agents can help in healing and reduced scarring risk.
