Muscle-relaxing injections using Botulinum toxin type A (Btx A), often referred to as Botox®, are among the best-known and most popular non-surgical treatments for lines and wrinkles caused by smiling, laughing and frowning. Every time you smile or frown, you set off a series of contractions in the muscles of your face. As the skin becomes less elastic over time, these contractions crease your skin with an unflattering pattern of lines. Btx A is a simple, non-surgical anti-wrinkle treatment that can smooth lines by preventing the muscle contractions that cause furrows and fine lines when the face is in motion.

Various Btx A products are available including Botox®, Azzalure® and Bocouture®. Dr Rose will discuss with you which product will best suit your individual needs.

Treatment takes approximately ten minutes and involves just a few tiny injections. Over a short period of time you will see a noticeable improvement in facial lines, leading to a smoother, more youthful complexion.

Questions and answers

What is Botulinum toxin type A (e.g. Botox®)?

Botulinum toxin type A or Botox® is a prescription medicine made from a purified protein produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It is injected into muscles and can be used to improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles. It has been used for cosmetic treatments for over 20 years, and is now used in over three million cosmetic procedures worldwide each year.

How does it work?

A series of tiny injections temporarily blocks nerve impulses to the treated muscles, smoothing the skin by reducing the muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles to form.

What happens during muscle-relaxing treatment?

The skin is thoroughly cleansed prior to treatment. Topical anaesthetic can be used if preferred, but is rarely necessary. A series of tiny injections using an ultra-fine needle is made into the desired locations. The volume of liquid injected is so small that any discomfort associated with the injections is minimal.

How long does the treatment take?

The entire procedure takes approximately ten minutes.

Is it painful?

Discomfort is usually very minimal and very brief.

When will I see results and how long do the results last?

Improvement can be seen within days, and lines continue to improve for up to a month. Visible results can last for up to four months; individual results may vary.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

Although the results are visible, treatment with Botulinum toxin type A will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve ‘had work done’. The activity of the treated muscles is temporarily reduced but the rest of the facial muscles are not affected, allowing you to smile, frown and make other facial expressions as normal, but with fewer wrinkles and creases in the treated areas. Dr Rose will discuss your individual needs and tailor your treatment to suit you.

Is the treatment safe? What are the potential side effects?

Botulinum toxin type A is a widely used and well-researched treatment with an excellent long-term safety record proven by hundreds of clinical studies; serious side effects are extremely rare. Uncommonly, patients experience temporary bruising, tenderness or headache. Rarely, a condition known as ptosis (eyelid droop) may occur after treatment, but this is amenable to corrective treatment.
