What is radiofrequency microneedling?

Microneedling uses a medical device to create thousands of microscopic needle columns in the dermis (the deeper layer of skin). The needle columns close rapidly, allowing the skin to start the process of healing the tiny damaged areas and resulting in the formation of collagen, the production of new skin cells, enhanced blood supply and the rejuvenation of the dermis layer, the internal scaffolding of the skin.

Radiofrequency microneedling maximises this rejuvenation by delivering heat to the deeper layers of skin, creating a controlled trauma which triggers the body’s healing response to create stronger, firmer, lifted skin. Focus Dual enables Dr Rose to adjust both the needle depth and the power of radiofrequency energy delivered, providing targeted treatment for all skin types. The device can be used either for microneedling alone, or for combined treatment (radiofrequency microneedling).

What areas of the face and body can Focus Dual treat?

What happens during Focus Dual radiofrequency microneedling treatment?

A topical anaesthetic may be applied prior to treatment, but is usually not necessary. The treatment area is double-cleansed before the handpiece, containing a number of microscopic needles, is applied to the target area. The needle cartridge is single-use and sterile. The needles move up and down and the needle depth, speed and radiofrequency intensity are adjusted depending on the condition of each area. Post-treatment, a soothing and protecting SPF 50 serum is applied to help aid the skin’s recovery.

Can radiofrequency microneedling be used on patients of all ages?

Yes. Younger skin that doesn’t require lifting and tightening can benefit from microneedling alone to refine pores, even out texture and improve overall quality. More mature skin will benefit from the dual effect of microneedling with radiofrequency. Focus Dual allows Dr Rose to customise treatment for each patient by combining the appropriate needle depths and radiofrequency intensity.

When will I see results?

Following treatment your skin will start to repair and renew itself, working below the surface in the dermis. Your complexion will be noticeably brighter a few weeks after the first treatment but the process will continue to work over the following months, peaking twelve weeks after the final treatment and delivering natural, long-lasting results. As the body continues to produce new collagen after treatment, you may see further improvements up to six months after the final procedure. When Focus Dual is used for scarring, the reduction in the appearance of scars will become more noticeable as time goes on.

Is it painful?

Dr Rose will apply a topical anaesthetic prior to treatment to minimise any pain. You will experience mild discomfort during treatment. Immediately after treatment your skin will tingle and feel warmer and tighter than usual. This usually starts to subside within one to two hours and will resolve completely within 24 to 36 hours.

How long does the treatment take?

It will normally take up to 30 minutes for the topical anaesthetic to numb the skin and between 15 and 60 minutes for the procedure itself, depending on the area and condition being treated. For most patients, Dr Rose recommends a course of up to six treatments at four-week intervals for the best results.

Will there be downtime?

There is virtually no downtime. A slight swelling and redness are present immediately post-treatment and should subside quickly.

Is radiofrequency microneedling safe? What are the potential side effects?

Radiofrequency microneedling is a very safe procedure when carried out by an experienced professional such as Dr Rose. Typically, there will be a small amount of bleeding and redness during treatment. This is normal and generally resolves quickly. Some patients will experience redness for a few days after treatment, resembling mild-to-moderate sunburn. Because the needle columns created in the skin during microneedling are so tiny, there is no risk of permanent scarring. It is very important to use high-factor sun protection for at least two weeks after treatment. Dr Rose will discuss full aftercare instructions during your consultation.

What is high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)?

HIFU is a revolutionary fat reduction and skin tightening treatment which focuses energy at specific depths into the subcutaneous fat layer to disrupt stubborn fat cells, lifting, firming and tightening sagging skin without surgery. The body’s natural detoxification processes then remove the treated fat cells. The heat generated during treatment tightens the skin from the inside out and stimulates the production of new collagen. Focus Dual’s unique safety assist transducers (SATs) emit high-intensity ultrasound waves in a unique pattern that allows for safer and more comfortable treatments for all skin types.

What is a HIFU non-surgical face lift?

A HIFU non-surgical face lift is an effective and non-invasive way of addressing the effects of skin ageing without surgery. It works on the SMAS layer deep below the skin – the layer that surgeons tighten during face and neck lifts. Focus Dual harnesses the latest ultrasound technology to radiate energy to the SMAS layer for natural, long-lasting tightening, lifting and plumping. During treatment you may experience some mild heating or a slight tingling sensation, described by patients as moderate and acceptable. Treatments are carried out every four to six weeks and Dr Rose typically recommends up to three treatments for best results. Top-up sessions are performed as required, usually once or twice a year. Results can usually be seen immediately, continuing to improve up to twelve weeks post-treatment as your collagen is renewed. Results are expected to last one to two years.

Focus Dual can deliver HIFU treatments to multiple areas of the body for highly targeted fat reduction, firming and tightening of loose skin. HIFU energy penetrates through the skin’s layers; the high frequency of the ultrasound results in heating deep under the skin, effectively destroying fat cells and tightening the skin. The damaged cells are flushed from the body via natural processes. Treatments are carried out every four to six weeks and Dr Rose typically recommends up to three treatments for best results. Most patients notice an improvement two to three weeks after the first treatment, and results will continue to improve over time, peaking twelve weeks after the final treatment.
